VIPole Secure Messenger – App Review

In a world where colossal amount of data is exchanged between each other amidst threats related to security which are constantly increasing every passing day, it is extremely important to use a messenger that’s built for security. VIPole is a premium instant messenger for secure messaging, calls and encrypted file storage. Let’s review the android app and see what makes it stand out from similar apps.

The first screen on the app is a login screen. It prompts the user to enter VIPole ID and password. It also populates some default parameters including Certificate Authority (CA) directory, certificate details etc. There is an option for users to configure their proxy settings (SOCKS5 is supported). Additionally, users can load the parameters of their VIPole service provider. Incorrect entries can be rolled back using the “Reset” button.

For those who haven’t registered on VIPole, a “Signup” button is conveniently provided on the login screen. The SignUp screen expects the user to enter VIPole Id, Password, Email and Promo code which is optional. Once the user submits these details, an activation email is sent which the user is expect to click on to confirm registration.

Soon after login, VIPole’s security mechanism kicks in. A panel is displayed across which the user is expected to move the finger. This mechanism is in place so that VIPole profile can be created by randomly generating the user’s private keys. As the user moves the finger, more and more jumbled alphabets and numbers (private keys) are displayed. Once this task is done and everything is alright, the app displays a success message. The user can choose to cancel at this stage in which case this activity has to be done all over again or the user can proceed to the next step by clicking on the “Next” button.

On the next screen, the app requests the user to elevate the level of security by keying in a secret phrase. This phrase is only known to the user and is recommended to be as long and hard to guess as possible. This step is required so that the user’s profile can be encrypted using the secret phrase. It is critical to remember this phrase because if it is forgotten there is no way to retrieve the user profile and will be lost forever.

Once these two security steps are completed, the app goes ahead and creates the user profile and loads the chat page. This is where user can see their groups, group chats, and contacts, set their online status, view their account details and create new groups, group chats and contacts. There are also options to make calls, add notes, send files and manage passwords. In order to manage passwords, the user is expected to key in the secret phrase to establish identity. Passwords can be created globally or at group level. Users can share the app to others using the “Tell a friend” feature on click of which the app lists the various apps installed on the device which in turn can be clicked on to spread the word.

There is a menu button on the top left corner which has a whole range of options including news, comprehensive account security settings, general app settings, options to hide/show hidden contacts, shortcuts to features available on chat page, option to view and update profile and history of communications done through the app. Apart from this, users would be able to lock the app by clicking on the “Lock” option from the menu. This would put the app in the background but it would still be running. A unlock code must be entered in order to get back to the app. The unlock code is usually the secret phase but password/fast unlock code can also be configured to be used. This can be done on the account security setting screen. Finally, the last few options under the menu button allows the user to logout, know more details about the app and provide feedback. Users can quit the app using the quit option under menu button which shuts down the app.
