Maximum Overdrive iOS Game Review

Written by

maximum_override_iconIn this iOS game, you drive big monster trucks and your goal is to destroy your opponents with the big guns mounted on your vehicles. You can choose between 4 maps to compete on and choose from a variety of monster trucks to drive, and weapons and upgrades to enhance your dominance in the post-apocalyptic battle arenas!

This game has potential. When I first played the game, I was initially expecting a really fun game. The graphics are quite decent actually. In fact, the graphics remind me of the same style seen in the Borderlands video game series.

However, it falls short in too many aspects to make it an enjoyable experience. The first and most irritating issue that I had was the controls. The layout of the controls is perfect! But, the way the monster trucks move is not so great. Just steering the wheel a little bit will make your monster truck turn suddenly.

When you hit objects, like walls and such, sometimes, it almost looks like the truck is climbing the wall, then does a weird flip.At one point, when I was driving (erratically, due to the bad steering) then I had ran into a fence, but install of smashing into it and flinching, the truck’s first two wheels drove over the fence, then my truck was stuck on the fence until my opponents destroyed me.

For me, the game got a bit boring after a little bit because it is always the same game mode. Driving around and destroying enemies, but that doesn’t mean that the game can’t be enjoyed for long periods of time, however, it wouldn’t be my game of choice if I were stuck on a long plane ride.

Despite the few drawbacks, like I said before, the graphics are pretty good. The choice of which vehicle to drive is also great. All of the trucks, to me, look really well designed. The way the whole game is designed feels like I’m driving in a post-apocalyptic environment which is a good thing since that is what the games is. Causing mayhem in a wasteland.

The sound is okay I guess. I’m not too good at determining if a games music and sound effects are good. The sound seems feasible. I was running the game on my iPad Mini 2 with Retina.

The game has multiplayer capabilities however, when I tried to find a match online, no games were found, so I’m assuming the multiplayer aspect of the game is dead, but if you do try this game and get a chance to play online, the game play will likely be similar to single player.

The game itself has some in-app purchase for more in-game money like most free-to-play games, but is free to download, so I would definitely recommend that you at least try the game out.

The game can sometimes feel a bit cheap and lacks polish, but if you don’t mind the wonky steering mechanics, than the graphics and just the overall feel of this game will be a very enjoyable experience!
